Beau Haworth Taos Paperworks ![]() ARTISTS' STATEMENT and BACKGROUND Beau Haworth, an avid skier and rock climber, began his creative sojourn in upstate New York. After receiving his Associates Degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management in 1976, Haworth settled in the Shawangunk region of New York to pursue his career as a chef and his love of rock climbing. His introduction to the art of papermaking was prompted by practicality rather than personal interest. While working on his rock climbing photography in the darkroom at the Women's Studio Workshop, he was offered free darkroom time in exchange for helping out in the papermaking studio. As this arrangement continued over the next few years, Haworth's interest in papermaking intensified. In 1983, with his papermaking skills in tow, Haworth headed for Taos, New Mexico, where he hoped to finance his passion for skiing with his knowledge of papermaking. Serendipity was on his side: not only was the skiing awesome, it just so happened, R.C. Gorman was in need of paper pulp for his large format paper castings. Thus, Taos Paperworks was born. Since the launch of his papermaking studio in 1985, Haworth has been involved in numerous art projects with some of the Taos area's most distinguished artists. He has worked collaboratively in the creation of original, large format art pieces with such artists as Amado Pena, Bill Gersh, and Veloy Vigil, to name just a few. These days, while much of Haworth's attention is devoted to the creation of printmaking and watercolor papers and his original line of handmade paper ornaments, he still manages to squeeze in a little time for skiing and rock climbing. ![]()
