Elaine Sutton Gypsy Moon ARTIST'S STATEMENT and BACKGROUND Beads have been used for millennium by almost all cultures for barter, adornment, protection and prayer. I see beadwork as the happy collaboration of the sacred and the sensual. It is a meditative, intensely focused art form, one that opens many inner doors. Beads speak in a shimmering, tactile language that everyone can understand. As patterns migrate from place to place, they are translated by the needs and desires of the culture in which they arrive. I have been beading for much of my life. Very early on I became addicted to the glitter and magic of beads, the endless combinations of colors and patterns. I work predominantly in seed beads -- tiny bits of faceted glass originated by the Italians in the 14th century. Today, I travel the world looking at and collecting beads, and create my designs from an amalgamation of tradition and imagination. ![]()
