ARTIST'S STATEMENT

For as long as I can remember, I have loved to create things with my hands. Early on, my love of fiber arts was a passionate response to working with yarn textures and colors in my hands.

Each hat is uniquely knit with a variety of fibers -- mostly wool -- to allow for the fabric to felt. Most of my hats are one-of-a-kind though I can repeat a shape. I felt the hats by hand shocking the wool with sudden water temperature change and lots of agitation to shrink the fabric into a firm and durable form. The wool is then conditioned to soften and deter moths with a lavender rinse.

I love to transform the knitted piece into a durable felted shape. The process by hand reminds me of the transformative power of fire, water, wind and earth. I gather my inspiration for hat shapes from old movies and hats from around the world and throughout history.

The shawl wraps and warmers are all handknit in mostly natural fibers: wool, angora, mohair, alpaca, silk, linen and cotton. Like my hats, each piece is unique and can be made more so with your custom requests.

My beaded stitch markers and spindles-to-wear use glass, stone and sterling silver --creating precious tools for the knitter and spinner.

BACKGROUND

I was born and raised in Northern New Mexico with an Engineer father and an Artist mother. My family household was filled with projects inside and out. In 1982 I earned a BFA in Textile Design from The University of Kansas. There, I also explored Papermaking, Photography and Dance. I have returned to the Land of Enchantment with my family and gather inspiration daily from the beauty of Northern New Mexico. I teach yoga to balance my life with inspiring movement. Creating adornment is a way for me to share the beauty that I see in this dance of life. I hope you see it, too.
