John Nettles
Taos Architectural Copper

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I have always been a tinkerer. When I was very young I would take things apart, and I soon realized that to continue with this hobby I would also have to learn to put them back together. I later began to make useful things from scratch. My curiosity about materials and tools led me to work in the building trades with a variety of media (wood, plaster, stone and tile). I finally settled on coppersmithing, finding it challenging and satisfying to create three-dimensional objects from a two-dimensional material.

BACKGROUND
I received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from George Washington University in 1992. I have worked in the building trades in Washington D.C., France, Florida, California, and New Mexico, which exposed me to a variety of trades in a variety of architectural idioms.

In 1994, I came to Taos for a few months to help a friend build his house. Two years later, still in Taos, I started working with copper full-time. Initially, my focus was on producing parts for roofing. It has now expanded to sinks, sconces and all types of custom architectural accents.

In my free time I volunteer as a radio journalist at the local public radio station, and play cornet in a marching band.
