ARTIST'S STATEMENT
A large part of working with clay has been the design and implementation of vessels to hold food, flowers or as storage for other daily use items.
The daily rituals of dining, storing and decorating are where I get my ideas for form, shape, color and size. For me, carving these vessels adds a dimension to the pieces that makes them seem a showcase for whatever they hold. When they are not being used as a container they serve as a beautifully decorated object.BACKGROUND
I reside once again in my hometown of Taos, New Mexico. My family has lived here for generations. I returned to Taos in 1995 after receiving my BFA as a ceramic artist from University of Montana in Missoula. Previous to that I studied the ceramic arts at New Mexico State University in the southern part of the state, Las Cruces.
Back in Taos I decided to build my studio, which also serves as a supply store for other potters in the area. As a tribute to the land that called me back I named the studio and line of pots Tierra Hermosa Pottery, which translates from Spanish as "the beautiful, lovely earth". This area is well known for its micaceous clay deposits and native adobe soils. The first was used in the making of glistening local earthenware, and the latter is employed in construction of many local dwellings. These clays are not used in my current line of pots, yet as a ceramist they serve as a strong connection to this land.
